I fixed my fuel flow problem but my bike still seemed to run rich. I checked the plugs 1 at a time and found that 3 out of 4 were real black. The number 1 cylinder seems to be good and has sort of a golden brown color. I think thats good but who knows. As far as the other 3 cyclinders they are real black. I have not done a compression test so another problem could be bad valves I suppose. Let me know what you guys think. I do not have any tools to measure or sync carbs but is there something I could do to test it.

Search engine works well. Let me ask this way though---How can I lean out my carbs a little? What adjust screw is for mixing? I know on my old car I could make some small tweaks to the air mixture screw and I could either lean or rich out 2 cylinders at a time.

You are trying to take shortcuts to solve a problem that cannot BE solved quickly.

If you start tweaking screws without doing all the very necessary prerequisites, you are going to dig yourself into a deeper hole.

The decision is yours. Everything you need is here, the rest is up to you.

Thanks Big--- To be honest I`m not really trying to take a shortcut ,in fact I am trying to find the best approach to balance. I know my porsche 914 was a fun build and a forum like this helped me along the way. When I start a project I like to know as much as possible. What I can see based on the sparkplugs and the way the bike rides is that i`m running just a little rich. I re-examined the plugs and cyl1 is good, cyl 2 is a little rich and 3~4 are real rich. I can smell it`s rich at idle. The good news is that it idles prety good and runs fairly strong. Th P.O did a carb rebuild but what I am reading is that it is probably a little out of balance. Probably not alot but just a little and thats why I want to make a small tweak to lean it out.`ll keep reading and hopefully someone could say move screw x just a little and see what happens. I know the screws are sensative but I am going to mark them.

Post your location, maybe someone near you has some tools you could borrow.

Actually, there are 4 "screw X's" one on each carb, and they are the pilot mixture screws.

Tweaking them is one of the FINAL steps in fine tuning, after:

    -Valve adjustment
    -Bench sync
-Float level check using clear tube and fuel
    -running vac sync
    then
    -tweak mixtures

You ARE trying to shortcut "the process" and you are probably not going to get the results you expect.

    Find out for yourself.

The Starting Point to have any success at Fine Tuning is having the Carburetors C-L-E-A-N.
Carbs that are not absolutely Clean and Operating just right will derail any chance of achieving any stage of Fine Tuning.

Now, that the Carbs have ages 25 ~ 30 Years, ...
Refinishing and Polishing the Carb Body Bores is necessary.

Completing the task has become the Goal of many of the XJ-Bike Forum Members who are chalking-off the steps as the get closer to Dialed-IN.

Those who pressed through the process and made say they feel like they own a new Bike.

Damn,,,,I just got home and went out to the shed to look at the carbs and the closer I got the more I could smell gas. It looks like the gas leaked through the petcock and no I dont have a shutoff. I know I need a shutoff but I just got the bike 2 weeks ago. Its rainy and I dont have time to work on it today. That really blows . I`ll have to pull it out of the shed if it`s not raining tomorrow and check here the leak is coming from. The only thing I did different was hook up the vacuum so hopefully its an easy fix.
