I have sent for parts for carbs I have removed and cleaned. Siliconed the carb to head manifolds (pics in earlier thread - 'running high in idle...etc) because covered in cracks, and dont know if they go all the way through, and perhaps, only 'open up'' when machine reaches operating temp., the rubber expands..... causing vacuum leaks......?

Anyone know if I have to remove pilot mixture screws, and examine them, the o-rings, and the springs, and how to do it? - Do you just unscrew them, and they pop out, and likewise clockwise to put them back in (they seem 'sprung', if I tweak them a little - but that doesnt show worn o-rings does it?)

When I checked the diaphragms, (all passed the clunk test, after having to push the pin back in place on one), one had very slight wear, in two places, but when I held it up to the light, I couldnt see the light through it, it just looked a bit 'thinner' if you understanding my meaning....?
I have seen in' xj4ever church of clean', you can use electric liquid tape to do a repar if necessary....?

Anyway, whilst Im waiting for parts, I have downloaded a picture file reducer, and uploaded some pics of my bike at present for you to have a look at........as you can see - no carbs!
    Hope you like em.....? :)

That bike looks great. I just had my carbs apart. They tend to be sticky just due to age and not really ever being adjusted. If you do take them out you will need a good flat pick to remove the o-ring. Everything else just falls out, clean it up good and put it back together. I did not replace my o-rings they looked fine. Do you have a color tune?? I just finally after 16 years with this bike got one and I do not know how I lived without it. Used only for setting idle mixture makes what was a hassle of spark plug reading into a simple screw turning adjustment and done.

    Hi :)
Thanks for all your replies to pics! and questions....

I am not the original owner, there were 9 previous....originally USA - imported UK mid 1980s, - was silver model - resprayed red, @ 1997 by a UK PO.

I bought it from a dealer last August, in Wolverhampton, UK, and I paid £1000.00 cash for it. (knocked him down from £1,300)

Sent it back under warranty cos of high idling, and they did work on it, and it came back better (1200rpm idling, instead of 1400+!), but it only had 1 months warranty! and that ran out, so I am now with the responsibility of putting it right myself.......it is only doing 29miles to the UK Imperial gallon...AARGH!

    BUT I AM ENJOYING IT(!)

I put the screen on, I like it, its practical to the point of streaming at high speed (apart from keeping a bucket full of rain off me!!, and I think it looks good too!
(depends on the individuals's taste, ot course)

Some of the parts were hard to find, and expensive (?), the side panel badges for instance set me back £70 cos I had to buy panels with them (sold them on tho - so got some funds back) Still looking for those 'oh-so'hard to find'! two back chrome left and right grab-handles, or 'stays' as it says in OEM lists....anyone know of any available.....?

Removed pilot mixture screws last night - o-rings ok, springs ok, washers ok. Cleaned shaft and parts, and reinstalled, at the 2 and one half turns out recommended on this site(?)
One or two were set further out, but that was probably what seller had done to try and get rid of high idle, without doing what I'm doing, to give it back to me in best idling condition he could muster, til the warranty ran out!!!

There were cracks in the manifolds, which I have now sealed. (it has been established(?) that my 'high idling in operating temperature, is /maybe caused by vacuum leaks (I have reset all the valve clearances now)

I have still got to do bench synch when new parts - (throttle shaft seals, and fuel-pipe 'o' rings) have arrived, and are installed.

Reassemble the carb bank, (I shall wet-set floats again!! just in case!!)bench synch, put back on bike - vacuum synch with 4-dial vacuum synchroniser, recently purchased... got to buy a colortune plug to do final tuning...but I am way ahead of myself.....

Thank you to all at xjbikes, (even those who give me bollockings - yes you know who you are(?)!! who have helped me on my recovery journey so far - you really are invaluable....and saved me a lot of time (and money!)I have achieved far more than I ever thought I was capable of, with your support... - keep 'em coming!!

    Regs.
