    Good afternoon everyone.

I bought this tank as it was advertised as from a 1983 XJ750 and planned on swapping out to my 1982 XJ650 for the increased fuel capacity and look of the "shoulders".

I checked the specs for the 1983 XJ750 fuel capacity on the XJCD site and found the following:
    Tank Capacity

    17 L (3.74 Imp gal, 4.49 US gal)
    Reserve Amount
    3.5 L (0.8 Imp gal, 0.9 US gal)

I just tried to put exactly 4 gallons of gas into this tank and filled to the brim it can take 3.6 gallons at most. This makes me think it's not from an XJ750.

    There's no bolt on Yamaha badge on the sides, though. From what I've read, 1983 Xj750s didn't have sending units. 20190121_173044.jpg 20190121_172451.jpg 20190121_173044.jpg 20190121_172451.jpg 20190121_172442.jpg 20190121_172418.jpg

I'm posting some pictures and would appreciate your help and consideration.

    Thanks much,
    John

Not a 550 tank, those have welded-on, side of tank "bars" that accept screws in each end (just like a 650 Maxim tank has; the emblems on those bikes are retained by screws rather than by adhesive tape).

It does look like a 750 tank, they are a little fatter (side-to-side) than a 650 tank, you really need to have them side-by-side to compare, it's subtle but noticeable.

Thanks guys. I had Len look at some pictures before and he thought it might be a 1983 XJ750, but the fuel capacity is off from the specs and what others have posted. I can get 3.4 gallons of gas into my current XJ650 tank and expected to get 4.4 or so gallons into this tank, but as I initially reported, it wouldn't hold much more than 3.6 gallons.

Not yet. My plan was to verify fuel capacity before swapping current tank out.

Thanks for this helpful reply. I see the round and square "dents" in the picture I posted. I'll do a measurement across the same area and see if it comes up 10 inches as your post displays.

    Thanks again...

As Len says, the measurement differences are subtle.

Still disappointing that this tank can't hold at least 4 gallons.

Does the xj750k tank you show hold 4 gallons of gas?

Ok. Thanks again. I put exactly 4 gallons into my 5 gallon gas can and proceeded to fill up this tank. Before I got much past 3.5 gallons, it was full to the brim.

Since it can't even hold 4 gallons, it seems like it's not up to specs.

Thanks for the reply a100man. The exterior is in good shape...no visible evidence of patching. The interior has some kind of lining like POR-15 or ?

I'm going to take measurements front to back and across at various points and then run the same on my current XJ650 tank. Hopefully this would help get a better understanding of this tank capacity and help identify.

    Thanks, Ryangoth.

I looked up the XJ550 fuel capacity and it's 3.4 gallons, which is the same as the XJ650.

Did the XJ550 come with the Yamaha badge screwed to the tank?
