Problems while rebuilding starter

    So I have a 1981 xj650 with the dreaded starter click. I attempted to replace the starter Solenoid to no avail. So this weekend I pulled the starter with a rebuild kit handy and got into it. The starter was disgusting lots of carbon build up, so I pulled and replaced everything*(took lots of pics too!) but when I reassemble the starter it won't spin? It used to spin in my hand when out together if you twisted it, but now it won't move at all. I need to get new grease and apply that but I feel like there is a bigger issue here. Can anyone shed any light on this issue? Thanks for the help!

    I did mine and the kit came with the wrong bearing... so I tried to save the old one, no luck. I cleaned it all in the parts washer and made it nice nice.

    Same thing, would spin in my hand but not on the engine.

    Gave up and bought a rebuilt... no problems since.

    It is quite easy to get the alignment tab into the wrong slot. Open her up and double-check your work.
