Threw on a set of Murray's carbs and got it running. Oddly enough running it seemed to cure my starter clutch woes. I hope.
Went to town stripping it down and got rid of everything I'm not gonna use on it.
Cut the back end off and made it a hard tail. Wasn't happy where I put the knew tubes, so cut them off and redid it.
Got a thunderheart full wire harness on the way, as well as a dynatek ignition. Trying to find a new tci/cdi. Lots of new parts are still in transit. 20220121_152833.jpg 20220122_125851.jpg 20220122_131817.jpg
Gonna get everything mocked up, then tear it back down for paint and what not.

I realize it isn't done, but I'd worry about sliding off the back of that seat and onto the tire! Hold on tight! :)

Looks like you do good work. I do think you will end up changing the angle of that seat. Looks like if you take a hand off the bar you might slide off. I know still in the planning and engineering stage. Good luck on the project.

20220129_145644.jpg The front seat part is getting lowered and the rear still needs the seat bungs welded on. Lots to go still.
This is what it looked like the first time I hardtailed it. Hated the look.

Finally got the seat mount how I like it. Got the oil tank for the electronics, battery box, and rear fender mounted. Kinda thinking about using the left over rear fender on the front, gotta work it over a little first, but I think it looks slick. 20220222_190633.jpg

Would you do the Murray’s carbs again? I am thinking strongly about it. In fact I don’t know why anyone would fuss with the stock carbs and airbox. The airbox makes it so hard to work on. It’s literally not worth it. Anyone want some original hitachi carbs off a 1981 XJ750 SECA?

I just saw you're due south of me... If you want to donate me your seat, I'll gladly take it!

Doing almost exact same thing to mine. Hardtail gonna be the same, but I been thinking about welding that tube that the shaft cover is attached to. So instead of it having the bushing and ability to travel up and down with the rear wheel, it will just be solid. Was wanting opinions please

I would not weld anything to a part that might need to be removed someday?
    Cheers, 50gary
