Okay... so I’m rebuilding a bike.
Got the brakes done, electrical, etc.

Me and my buddy got it stared using starting fluid right now with choke on full. It has compression, spark, and I’m using a makeshift gas tank so I don’t have to deal with the vacuum petcock

It’s not starting now at all without starting fluid. Any suggestions on what I should do?

    It’s a 1980 Yamaha Xj650 Maxim.

Yes have you taken carbs to church? If it will not start without starting fluid , choke will not work properly , you will have to pull carbs and remove float bowls. Go to the top of page click xj4ever read the information overload hour lots of good info.

Yeah, I did a thorough cleaning on absolutely everything.. I'm thinking I didn't set the floats right.

Flip carbs over ,pull bowls measure from the flange of carb body at rear of float , should measure 17mm height ,this good starting point , you should wet set carbs to get it right.
