xj550 sitting for ten years// first bike
Im still learning all of this, but I think I added a link to previous forum where you guys helped me get xj550 maxim sitting in a block of varnish for ten years start again. (thanks) Anyway, it starts every time now, however the rpms jump straight to 7000 rpms then start climbing slowly. I haven't let it climb past 8000 so I don't know if would blow itself up or not. So any advice as to where to start to resolve this issue would be appreciated.

that's incredibly high rpms for an initial startup on the bike. make sure the throttle cable has some slack. and when you put the carb bank on the bike, you did a bench level sync for the butterflies correct?

 Uhhh no... The butterfly flaps all looked like they were all the way closed already, and the only way Ive heard of to set them is with a straightened paper clip to set the gap, and then Im not sure how to get past setting the first one. ..................guess ill be pulling off carbs..........again

So you didn't really do a bench sync.

Are the valves in spec now?

Did you individually wet-set the float levels?

Yeah, I set each float levels individually to 2 mm +/- 1mm just like you instructed in my last thread. That's when the bike started (I think I cried a little by accident JK) I have neglected the valves though. Would tight valves cause extremely high idle?

    +1.

No sense in getting the carbs synced if the valve shim clearances are not in spec. its not hard or scary to check either. Float levels are a pain in the @s$ but once they are correctly set, you'll know it and be happy with yourself. Hence the reasoning why I get such great gas mileage on my 550 maxim

How about YOU WON'T GET the carbs properly sync'ed if the valves aren't in spec?

I coulda sworn we've said "get your valves in spec" more than once in response to this issue...
