Should the head stud be re-used? (1981 XJ650 maxim)

    Hey happy New Year! I was wondering if it was advisable to reuse head studs/bolts when putting the head back together. I have the head rebuild kit with all the gaskets and bearings. I didn't realize that I might need the studs. The studs look a little rusty but I don't know if this means anything. The studs at the front of cylinders 2 and 3 look the worst.. also is one picture of the stud that came out with the head nut. I have the haynes manual but can't find it explicitly anywhere. Thanks for the help!

    The studs are reusable. Clean the rusty ones up wth a wire brush.

    And threads should have a drop or 2 of oil on them for correct torque. Dry threads will bind and you will get a low torque on the stud.

    I'd re-use.... otherwise you're looking tearing down a whole lot farther just to replace the studs

    Not neccesarily, some manufacturers torque figures are quoted for a dry clean thread

    Yamaha does state in Oem manual "apply oil"
