Silly Question? maybe? How many Miles can I put on my XJ

so I purchased my 650 back in 2013
it had 33k miles on it then
I just got back from my summer vacation of driving from SD to Utah
it is about 1100 miles each way
she ran like a champ.. as she always does
I keep up on all maintenance each spring
my question is I just rolled 42k
how many miles can I expect to put on before I need to start looking for
a new motor or new bike?
or do I have lots of miles ahead of me?

 

I know of a couple that have gone over 100k. Your not quite half way there yet!
Keeping it maintained is the key factor in making it last.

awesome.. last compression test gave me 130 across all 4 cylinders

 

I read of one review of an owner that put 190,00miles on a 650 when he finally parked it , then bought another with about 40,000

 

Keep the valve clearances in spec, the oil good, and the carbs clean, you won't ever care about # of miles

 

It'll go forever if you take care of it and fix things. My GM truck is just about 225k and people always ask me my secret. I just say "when things break I fix em".

 

Japanese 4 cylinder engines are quite durable. I know it's apples to oranges, but my civic just passed 270,000 km. I think that's around 165,000 miles. Engine is going strong, it's the everything else that is falling apart, and that's mainly due to salt in winter. Prolly not a motorcycle problem.

 

The only person that can answer this question owns a crystal ball.

 

Maintain it and it will go on and on..the only limiting thing is the chain guide and starter chain clutch ... if you have to pull engine split case and replace should be good for another 100, 000 ... my 82 750 seca only has 17000 so it should have alot more life left.

 

+1 Here for sure. Keep that oil changed at least within the recommended intervals - I change the filter every time as well-cheap insurance. Keeping the valve adjustment in spec is critical- wanted to mention cam chain adjustment too if your bike has the manual type. If you do these simple things routinely, she'll run until you are done. I've seen many Japanese 4 bangers on bikes blow right by 100K with little trouble if you maintain it properly.
