Bike was running high RPM's when warmed up. I adjusted the throttle when warm. It seems to idle better when warm. Now it seems to run low rpm when cold - about 1000, but stays running. I smell gas when it first riding. No noticeable leaks where I park. When warmed up, it seems to race when shifting into 3, 4, 5 gear - rpm's climb slightly. What's going on?

sounds like dirty carbs to me, anytime you have a problem with idle or running, dirty or out of adjustment carbs can be suspected. the gas smell might be the vent on the gas cap letting vapor out. are you parked out in the sun?

I do park in the sun at work. I also just filled it with gas and put it to the top of the tank, which I had not previously done. Thanks for the info on the carbs. The PO is a friend, who told me he cleaned and sync'd the carbs and bowls. I hope to talk with him more on this.

    Is the enrichment still engaged?

No matter how you look at it...you will have to learn to sync and adjust pilot mixtures too.
Make sure to set your idle @ ~1050rpms AFTER the bike has completely warmed up. Maybe after a 10 mile ride.

The gas...could be from the tank, or leaking float bowl, or from an overly rich mixture.

Not sure I understand the enrichment question. I did adjsut the idle to 1050 once warm, but when I start it cold it is at 1000. Seems to run ok, but I have a tendancy to give it a touch of gas sitting at the lights. After 10 minutes, I dont need to do this as it stays at 1050 while idling. As I indicate, once warm it wants to rev between the higher gears. I'm new to the mechanic work but learning. I agree, I need to learn to do the sync and clean among other work. Just got the bike a couple of weeks ago and have been tinkering with the idle and other problems. I just want to ride as the weather here is finally nice and winter is just around the corner.

That sounds like you're pretty good then.
