I have an 81 xj650 maxim. I'm currently in the process of soaking my starter jets in my carbs. (wheee!!) Trying to get them clean. My other pressing issue, which may not matter too much after the carbs are right, is that after a couple attempts to start the bike the solenoid quits and I have to wait a minute or smack it with my current wacking tool of choice. I have looked into a factory solenoid and the price kind of sucks. Anyone know of an aftermarket or for something else solenoid that will work with this bike. Thanks in advance for any and all input.

I have heard that solenoids from lawn tractors will work.

I had my solenoid go bad a few years ago. Instead of paying the stupid price for a stock solenoid, I got one from a small engine repair shop. There are several different sizes that will work on bikes. They use them on lawn tractors, and some kinds of construction equipment that have electric starters. I noticed one on our gas powered water pump at work, that's where I got the idea. Mine is fairly small and is square, but I just shoved it into the round rubber holder from the old one and it works perfect.
You can also use one from any older Ford. They always had the solenoid separate from the starter and they work just fine. The only reason I didn't go that route is they are a little big to hide on the bike.
Check out Fleet Farm stores or just about any place that deals with lawn eguipment.

We've got a small solenoid for lawn tractors that should work and fit just fine with some slight modifications. It's a real common one, too, so you should be able to find it just about anywhere that sells the Primeline line of small engine parts (CARQUEST and NAPA).

    Part Number: 7-01860-1
    • SOLENOID
    • Replaces: 740207
    • Load current for battery ignition
    • 4 Pole Style 12 Volt DC*
    • 12V200 amps intermittent duty grounded thru battery switch*
*This is important as the OE Yamaha solenoid is grounded through the starter button. This solenoid will function just like OE.
