    I was taught to use ATF by sucking it into the engine via the vacuum ports until the engine stalls. The thermal shock helps break up some of th carbon. Leaving it overnight helps loosen the rest, and a good spirited ride the next day will blow the loosened carbon out.

    would you recommend this as just another step to do on a new to you bike, or only if you think you have a sticking valve/carbon build up?

    Only if you suspect that there is carbon buildup (evidenced by pinging, or an irregular idle after having done all of the usual catch-up maintainance).
