Hello... I'm new to this whole world, and I chose a 1980 xj650 Maxim as my first motorcycle/mechanical project. Now, PO had replaced the airbox with pods, and after doing a bit of research on this wonderfully enlightening forum, I have decided that I would rather go back to the airbox. I'm sure the carbs are not rejetted, as though the bike gets down the road, the choke must be consistently adjusted... and I have no desire to rejet the carbs. My question is this:

I can find xj650 airboxes on ebay and the like, but they are all 1981 and 1982... My xj650 is a 1980. Are they going to be compatible with the 1980 or do I need to hold out for a stock airbox that is actually pulled from a 1980 xj650?

I'm imagining that this is a fairly stupid question, but the help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just had a quick look at the parts manual and they all seem to have the same part number, so i guess you should be ok.

Buy the XJ CD, there is a whole bunch of info, guides, manuals, and servicing tips on there. Welcome to the site!

The airboxes are the same, but re-installing a stock airbox into the frame in one piece (not cut-up into smaller pieces) is next to impossible to do without moving/removing the engine.......re=jetting is a whole lot easier to do (kinda).
