I have an XJ 750 Maxin 1982 and the tachometer does not respond properly. It does not leak at the housing but doesn't respond the way it should when I rev it. I read the thread about replacing the seals but it doesn't leak. Is it as simple as a cable replacment ? Thanks for any info

My 82 XJ750J Maxim didn't have a cable to the tachometer. You could try electrical cleaner on the Tachiometer. If you do have a cable pull it off and Clean the cable and lube it. You might as well to the same for the odometer cable. Bigfitz has a rite up on cleaning the Odometer and Tachometer that might help.

This is for the gear driven tachometer and speedometer
    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15303.html

With the tachometer being electronic. gets some Electronics Cleaner spray, clean the connectors the best you can (take off the back cover) and put some dielectric greas in the plastic conector that goes in the headlight (while your at it clean and dielectric grease all the conectores in the headlight bucket)

My tachometer did not work at all when I got my XJ750J found taht there was a short in the tachometer wire which also caused the coil to cylenders 2 and 3 not to fire.(Gray wire IIRC)

good luck finding the issue. The wiring schematics are in the manuals. If you don't have one yet I would suggest to get one as soon as you can. I have a Hanse and it works well.

My articles do apply to the mechanical instruments and not the electronic ones, sorry.

Once I tear into my electronic tach, I'll add those details as well. You have escaped the mechanical tach issues, but my article does still apply to your speedo.

    Have fun.

Thanks. I'll ask around before I dig into it.

I've fixed only one of two electronic tachs to date. One was DOA, the other had a burned out primary winding that I was able to reconnect sucessfully.
Fitz, I am trying (in very poor fashion) to emulate your 550 cluster. You make it look much easier than it is. I wish I had a 10th of your skill.
