    Hey everyone

So my throttle sleeve (or tube) (the plastic inside the grip that controls throttle) broke off on my first ride.

I was wondering if this part is hard to find? or if it is a bike/model specific part? Will any other throttle sleeve fit? I dont know what to look for, they all kind of look the same

They are still available new from Yamaha. Chacal (XJ4Ever) has them (you'll get the part in days instead of the weeks it takes from Yamaha). They are readily available used on Ebay.

Not sure what XJ you have, but if you have to twist it THAT hard to get flying then your bike isn't properly tuned. :p

lol well, I have an 1983 xj650 maxim. I'm not sure what its supposed to feel like, it seemed to be normal, but then again, this was my first ever ride on a street bike. Could have already been cracked before though.

Funny thing is I browsed these forums a lot to make sure I did as much maintenance as I could to make sure I had a great first ride. Ended up walking the bike home uphill. Funny how that works.

The plastic can get brittle with age, and then even a minor tipover can cause it to fracture.

the enrichment circuit would have gotten you home or reaching under the tank and pulling on the throttle cable this can be a little warm to do

that part is common to a lot of bikes

Great well thanks for the help everyone. I really appreciate it!

Oh yeah, I didn't think of that! Well, not like it would have helped me on my very first ride, don't think I am experienced enough to handle pulling that in traffic :p

So I went to all the bike shops around looking for the part. None had it, but one said to try an r1/r6 throttle tube. So I went home and it fit on the bars, with some moving around I managed to make it fit. Just wondering if this is any safe? I might just order the original throttle part as mentioned above just in case.

Does it move freely and smoothly?
Nobody is going to have new parts for an XJ in stock (except Chacal).

And Chacal is an excellent resource for parts. I'm cheap, but the parts I have ordered from him work, unlike the part I ordered from Amazon, and just re-ordered from him today.

You are gonna be much happier if you get a new oem or a good used one on eBay. I had the same issue and I used a cool set up I had from an atv that took me probably 20 hrs of breeding and inbreeding and Frankensteining parts till it worked right. Now it's a one of a kind setup that will always be a complication

Yeah it seems to be moving alright. Altough my throttle doesn't spring back, not sure if that has anything to do with the new tube, i think it was like that before. But yes, I will order the OEM replacement and put my mind at ease, probably just keep this r6 one as backup

If the throttle sprung back before and does not now, then you know where the problem lies. Get the correct throttle tube.

I am wondering kind of the same thing what size is the throttle tube? What other options do I have? I need to replace a broken throttle tube and can’t find any info.
