The tread is getting a bit thin and plus I have to put air in it once a week. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good qualityrear tire for an XJ650 maxim? The front will be replaced later this years.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I just got a D404 from my local yamaha dealer for $79.29, put it on myself (first time I ever changed a motorcycle tire) and balanced it.

How'd you balance it? my local dealer wanted 120 bucks for the tire, 50% markup.

That D404 runs good on the Maxim I have, Front and Rear. Although I just bought a set of Bridgestone Spitfires for the XS750, just haven't had them on the road enough for a good comparison. The Spitfires were a bit cheaper from Bikebandit.

My dealer wanted $115.00 + $62.50 to mount and balance. Got my 404 from an indy for $85.00 + $20.00 to mount and balance + $27.50 for new brake shoes.

I also have the front and rear on my maxim I am satisfied with them good wet weather performance as well. Not that I like to ride in the rain but the felt stabil in the wet stuff. I got both for 152 and mounts myself.

As to balancing you have to built something even hieght on both sides and put your axle threw the wheel and set it on your platform you built. Give the wheel a Very light spin(mine went round and round for ever the first spin) mark the top with chalk, oil crayon whatever. spin 5-7 times if your mark comes up on top every time 180* from that spot is your heavy spot on the wheel. the top will be the light spot. add ome wieghts(sticky is good for the finding of how much you need. You just keep at it until you have a totally random spot on the top every spin. This is very old school and takes some time and you can't rush it.

The guy behind the parts counter at my local Yamaha dealer is a buddy of mine, he let me have the tire for cost + 10%.

That's a simple and practical way to go. I know i shouldnt have taken the shortcut and skipped the balancing process, but i cant tell the tire has any wobble to it, and i was just ticked off at the fact i was having to replace a tire that i had just paid 150 bucks for the dealer to mount and balance less than two months before.

I just got D404's and really like them.
79.95 plus 27 for mount and balance.
Refurbed rear brake with new shoes and 1000 grit sandpaper while the tire was off. What a difference!
Reasonable price for a great tire.

Thanks for all your input. I am going to see if I can get a reasonable price locally for it.
