Hey XJ people around Southern ontario. I was riding today and clutch cable snapped. We planned big riding for the long weekend and all shops are closed. Anyone have a cable I can buy within 1 hour ish of toronto? Any idea what other cables might fit? Thanks

Some hardware stores carry 'cable repair kits' - you could probably fabricate a (temporary) replacement cable.

    Good luck.

It broke right at the lever where the cable connects to the knob. Anyone every braze one back on ?

That is what the repair kits are for. If that is the original cable I would be wary of repairing it, replacement is your safest bet.

Last resort......bump it, in second, everytime you stop....you CAN, with practice go up/down the box without cable ( ask me how I know!!) obviously, up is a LOT easier...of course, stopping you'll just have to time EVER light/Intersection......as a plus your 'balance' will be 110%,!! and of course a final stop will mean rolling it to a (clunky) standstill all weekend.......but.....it can be done, hope you can find a suitable cable....I'd think a quite a few of other 80's/90's Yams would fit......and probably quite a few other Japanese bikes...from the same time period MIGHT be able to be fitted....
What about bike breakers (wreckers) any near you, you might get lucky.....

Go to a bicycle shop. Take the cable with you. They can make a replacement while you wait.
If you have no bicycle shop, try a small-engine reair shop.

Good point on bike shops. Try that tomorrow. Re ride without clutch. Did that to get me to where I could leave it for pickup. Too risky for weekend of riding around the city.
    Thanks guys

    Gents,
Found a guy 1 hour away !! with a cable. Back on the road this morning. Thank you for all the feedback.
FYI - I tried drilling through the T end to resolder the wire, but the stainless wire strands inside were SO hard, couldn't drill through it. Luckliy, found the replacement after screwing around for an hour trying to drill.

    Cheers

You KNOW if you carry.....cable tie...a spare clutch/throttle cable alongside the old one.......you will NEVER need them!!! ;)

Knowing all the things that might break, I'm considering tieing a spare XJ to my back when I ride so I always have a spare of everything !! :D:p

BTW- same guy had an xj650 already cafe'd up, painted frame and lots of aftermarket goodies. Small wiring fix and good to ride. He wants $1000 CDN if anyone is interested. I would have bought it but no room for another bike.

This is why I like the kits I linked above. I've never actually used one, but they'll let you replace any cable on the bike on the side if the road... And if I never do have to use it, it's $20 well spent ;)
