It's a Maxim X. Produced 1985-1986, but may have been sold as an '87.
Unless it's a Canadian import the engine is 700cc.

That was quick, thank you. I never knew of them. Am I right to assume their U.S. sales were dwarfed by their XJ predecessors?

Only due to the relatively few years of production, coupled with an overabundance of unsold machines from prior years.

Harley Davidson didn't like the hi volume of imported Japanese bikes flooding the American market. So HD filed, and got, the FTC to impose a lot higher import tarrif on imported Japanese bikes over 700cc. Yamaha turned the XJ750 down to a 700 to avoid the higher tarrifs. Yamaha and the other Japanese companies appealed and had the tarrif overturned. Since the govt. wheels of Justice took about 2 years to get straight, it wasn't til 1987 that Y. increased the cc. from 700 back to 750. And so the story goes....

I also have an '85, but if there's a difference from the '86, I'm not aware of it. Mine is not an "X", though. Gil
