Where do you put your cell phone on an XJ750?

Hi all, I was wondering if there was a good phone mount or some other alternative to keeping you phone out where you can see it. I have not been able to find anything that would work on these square handlebars. I thought someone might make some kind of a pouch with a clear compartment on the front but no luck with that either. I'm not too fond of leaving it in my coat or pants pocket. I really don't want to lose an $800. phone. Suggestions or ideas? Thanks.

 

I think most of us use a holder that clamps onto round bars. Look for something that has an adapter for under mirror mounting, like this.

I keep mine in my pocket so I can concentrate on riding.
When I do need turn-by-turn GPS directions I still keep the phone in my pocket (better access to call with after a crash if that ever happens) and use a bluetooth earbud.

 

Might want to take a look at this before doing any mounting. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212803 Some vibrations can mess with some phone camera focus systems.

 

I was going to bring this up also. It doesn't seem to affect my Samsung Android phone, Galaxy 8+.

 

I have a Samsung Note. It has been pretty tough so far. I guess I'll weigh my options for a little longer. Thanks everyone for your input.

 

I haven’t known anyone directly effected by this issue but the fact Apple made a service article means they acknowledge it is a thing. The footnotes also mentions older hardware. Personally I keep mine in a zipped pocket of a jacket or in a small backpack since my bike has no storage. Directions aren’t usually a problem, getting “lost” is a great part of the experience.

On my Seca, the rectangular emblem in the middle of the handlebar yoke one popped out and got lost. It revealed two screw holes perfectly spaced for a RAM base. I've used it for a Garmin Zumo, but now have RAM X-Grip mounts for pretty much all of my vehicles. I can get a pic this evening if interested.

I don't know the Maxim well (guessing from your .sig), but looking at parts diagrams, looks like there's a "750" emblem in the middle of the yoke cover. On the Seca, the screws to mount the cover to the bars are under that (and looks similar on the J, though the cover and the screws are on two different diagrams). That's what I used for the RAM mount. I sourced longer screws and fashioned some sort of spacer under the mount to stand off the thickness of the yoke cover. Again, pics this evening.

The spacer is just a chunk of wood spray painted black. If I had to do it over again, I would probably 3D print something.

 

Dummy me didn't even think of that, which is surprising since that's where I mounted the bracket for my aux-power plug.

Yeah, I did not yet have a printer when I bodged this together and sadly the bike has been mothballed since 2011. I'll measure up the blank area and height and knock out something for the 3D Printer Files section. Not a great designer/modeler, but I can get things 'good enough.'

If someone with a J or other XJ with that blank area could measure as well, hopefully they're the same. I'd go with a pretty heavy infill since you'll want to crank the screws down pretty good to trust your phone to it.

 

@Oblivion - which Ram Mount model is that exactly?

I would be interested in tinkering with it...

 

Pretty sure it's just a standard "Diamond Ball Base" RAM-B-238U. Can measure to confirm this evening.
