Hey guys, bit stuck with my XJ900. It has after market pipes and cone filters. The bike is new to me and I can't get it to run right. I've been told to hang fire with the jet kit as the yics might be causing the problem. The yics blanking tool that I keep seeing, is this just a tool to balance the carbs or is it something you would leave in permanently? The bike runs fine but ticks over too low and the idle doesn't seem to do much. Once warm I can get to idle Ok but will then have to back off once cold as choke is unresponsive and won't start ? Also joining two carbs I'm guessing is a vacuum pipe that used to lead to air bix, these are just left open. Should they be open or blanked? Any help much appreciated.

theres write ups on how to make one or you can buy one aparently some people leave them in there permently but mostly its recomended to use one to balance the carbs although some argue you dont need it because most bench sync i spose

Yics isn't the problem. Your bike was designed to run with yics. It was not designed to run with pods. Have you changed your jets to account for the extra air that they allow?

Refit the air box and your fueling troubles will go away.
The YICS tool (as mentioned) is for synchronizing the carbs, not for leaving in and riding. People who who leave it in are just covering up a carb problem that they are unable or unwlling to solve. Personally I find that the tool is not necessary, and suspect that the only time it really needs to be used is for tuning to meet emissions testing requirements.

it most likely allready has a jet kit installed i was talking to someone with pods and who got a jet kit from sigma six he was running rich he said he hadnt yet per instructions drilled holes in the slides wich he guessed made them fall sooner . seemed a bit drastic to me and exspensive if you mucked up ...so you might want to check your slides see if theres drill holes in the wrong places perhaps someone made an error

No way of knowing if it was jetted unless he did it, or there's other PROOF. To say
Out of the blue is a presumptive. ( don't get me started on "PRESUMPTIVE"......)

But yes, go back to airbox and original equipment.

i just presume someones installed a jet kit because he got the bike with pods on it one way or the other the jets have been modified or kit intalled in a attempt to get it tuned with the pods .... sounds to me if the choke is unresponsive at a uneducated guess it was running rich at some stage and has been leaned out aparently drilling holes in the slides does lean it out ......i am guessing dont take my word on it should do what more experienced people like hogfiddles and k moe sujest 1st and look for strange idiocies after

In the collective experience that is highy unlikely. Almost all the people who put pods on never bother with re-jetting.
Generally speaking, the worst enemy a motorcycle has is the guy who previously owned it.

Thanks for all your thoughts guy's! Would love to put air box back on but the bike has been hard tailed and this is no longer possible. You would assume that whoever fitted after market pipes n filters would have jetted it. Are oversized jets marked in any way to tell me if this has been done? The two air/vacuum pipes that join carbs 1&2 and 3&4, do I need to put hoses back on n do something with? Will a standard slide have no holes in?

[IMG] [IMG] mine dont from memory but i own a xj750 acording to ebay xj750 has two holes standed at bottom of slide where needle is and the xj900 has 3 by the and one smaller by the looks standed thats excluding the hole where the needle fits too ...this is a image of what should be a standed xj900 slide had trouble umploading so just pasted link http://postimg.org/image/6abtcrqsr/..........................if it hasnt been jetted and modded and you cant refitt the airbox maybe you might want to try a kit from sigma 6 with your mods and follow the instructions
