xj750rh battery smell...

hi all, i'm new to this board...it's good to know you guys are out there.

I just bought an 81 xj750rh....beautiful condition with 30k on it.
I rode it yesterday about 120km's...and when I got to my destination, I turned off the bike for about 10 minutes, then tried to restart...and "click" and no power.
No hint of gradual power loss on the ride, and the battery is emitting a rotten egg odor when I turned on the ignition.
Faint light in neutral indicator and headlight only...and not even a hint of an attempt to turn over.
Measured the voltage across the battery terminals and it came up short at a tad over 10v.
Had CAA (canadian version of AAA) come by with a booster pack and the bike started right up....but when the power pack was disconnected, the engine stopped.
I'm in a bit of a quandry as I am a ways from home and I don't have my manual with me.
So...I'm thinking that it's the alternator (brushes or whole unit...) AND the battery...or just the battery.
The easy fix is to just buy a new battery and try to get home on it...but if it's the alternator, that may not be enough to get me home...and may just fry that battery as well.

If anyone out there has had a similar issue and can provide any additional information that might help would be muchly appreciated!

 

Hello runningman...when th bike don't go...a new battery is a damn good start on gettin it home. When you're their, start checking th electrickery system, plenty of help/how to if you search through th posts...on all sorts of stuff, checking th rear brake is good idea as well.

 

Sounds like the battery was low on water before you left and the long trip boiled the rest of the water out. Refill the battery with distilled water and charge it up and see if it will hold a charge. You might need to buy a new one. Check your voltage with the rpms at about 2000 and let us know
