I'm just going over all possible issues that could come up with this bike of mine. I think the crank is direct drive through gears and the HYVO chain is for the alternator in the seca 750, or am I wrong? The engine is 100% rebuilt so I just want to know when I should worry about the chain guide and other oddities that may, or may not come up.

Correct. Primary drive is by gear. The chain only runs the "jackshaft" which has the alternator on one end and the starter gear on the other. Which is apparently why it has a solid plastic non-adjustable guide, the thing that tends to break up.

Unfortunately, there is no hard and fast pattern to the chain guide failure. Some (shaft driven) XJs go tens of thousands of miles and never experience the issue; but we've seen examples here of it happening on a bike with as little as 6K miles on it. It also doesn't seem to be related to the history of the bike either (although I'm sure it is and we haven't figured out WHAT the factors are.)

That, and in rare cases or after a really lot of miles, the starter clutch, are the only real "surprises" hiding in the motor.

well....if you're trying to come up with a comprehensive list of everything that CAN go wrong, it's a simple list:

    1. ANYTHING can break

Now if you want to look for specific things that are common, well then:

    1. brakes can delaminate
    2. carbs get dirty
    3. valves go out of spec
    4. orginal fuse boxes get brittle
    5. tires wear out
    6. coils develop cracks that let moisture in

    7. I'm sure others will add other things......

you say the engine is 100% rebuilt. So, if it was done correctly, don't bother coming up with a list. The engine will outlive you
